3-weeks past my latest exposure I came down with a very painful sore throat with both tonsils covered in white spots. I had a high fever and no appetite and fatigue. I was certain it was ARS. First, I went to Public Health and they did a rapid test and it was negative. I had been feeling sick for about a week and so I figured if it was ARS my body surely would have formed antibodies a week after feeling sick. ARS is the body fighting the virus which causes the fever etc. When I tested negative I was a bit in shock. Then I went home and read online that ARS mimicks Mono. So I went to my regular doctor that afternoon and had them run a mono bloodtest and sure enough I was positive for mono antibodies. My sore throat lasted exactly 7 days. My fever lasted 7 days also. On the 8th day I was completely back to normal.

I think you need to see a doctor. I am being serious. White spots indicate an infection. Its dangerous to let a sore throat go untreated.

2 years ago I had a really bad sore throat and it turns out I had an abcess (abscess) in the folds of skin just behind the tonsil in the neck and I could have died had I not gone to the doctor when I did. That is what the emergency room told me. I waited so long to go.

Have you gotten an HIV test yet? 5 weeks would be very reassuring.

Maybe you have tonsilitis? Or strep?

Its rare to have mono more than once, but it does happen. If it was mono you would also have a fever, fatigue and lack of appetite. The mono sore throat generally lasts only a week or two at most.

Any sore throat lasting more than a few days needs to be checked by a doctor. Untreated strep infections can be deadly as strep can travel into your blood and to your heart.

How long ago was your possible HIV exposure?

yaa im gonna to at 6 weeks!

Whoa ur symptoms would have got me soo worreid...im happy i didnt have a high fever! Ya i went to the doctor twice? they said its goin around and its not strep..and mono i had but they said it can reoccur with a sore throat uncommon! i mentiond my exposure and i told them about the girl etc! they said it shouldnt be a big deal and my chances were extremely low! soo i donno they told me to wait! but ive been told if it was ARS it would have been a whole bunch of things!??

Whoa ur sore throat 2yrs ago thats nuts...its funny how u dont realize how nice it is to be healthy and not worry about this things!! until ur feelin sick

I am still very worried about my symptoms. I sometimes wonder if I had mono when I was younger and just didnt realize it. So if I was tested for mono it would show antibodies. The only thing that makes me feel better is that white spots on the tonsils is not a symptom of ARS. ARS sore throat is just red, no white stuff.

Are you going to get a rapid test done? It sucks because my only option is a blood test and then waiting 7-10 business days for a result.

really...ya i live in Canada and actually in the whole of vancouver there is only 2 places that do rapid! i donno what im gonna do!! i mean to be honest...i would be content not with testin because i tested before that exposure and it was all negative...havent really had any symptoms..2 doctors plus Dr. hhh said no concern! i asked the girl she said nothing to worry about..and she checks often! soo i donno!! its stressfull gettin tested i hate it! but i know its the smart thing to do!! Well those 7-10 days will go by fast!!! but i mean u tested at 3 weeks? thats pretty reassuring!! plus u exposure was 4/2000? thats not bad..really and thats if he ws hiv +

well, my expsosure is 4/1000 since I am female, its much easier for me to catch HIV than a man from a woman.

There are people that get HIV during one encounter.

Odds are in my favor, but I dont really trust odds. Somebody always wins the lottery. I just hope I dont win the HIV lottery.
