I had a brief relationship (one night stand actually) with a very nice ordinary girl, who told me that she had been date raped, a year previous. I know that its probably ridiculous to be worried about anything but there was one occasion where I penetrated her for no more than 3-5 seconds without a condom
. I have had no contact with her since, I moved abroad, but lately I am concerned that she may have contracted something through the date rap. I know the odds would be high that she would have been infected through one encounter of sex
is very, very rare among most heterosexuals in this country - mostly because very, very few have it and even for those who do it is a very difficult virus to transmit. The odds are very heavily against HIV
I totally agree, I have read that amongst healthy heterosexual males(no previous std’s, no long term HIV infected partner etc.) HIV is exceptionally rare. This incident is actually something that happened way in the past maybe 1 year or more previous, during my student days. It pisses me of because I have always been so careful especially with one night stands. I think its only entering my head now because I have had time to slow down and reflect on my sexual history, and this incident was red flagged by my over perfectionist brain.Anyway thanks for the input.
Hi Teak,
appreciate your realistic input. Would you however not agree that HIV is very rare in "healthy" heterosexual males (no previous std’s, no long term HIV infected partner, no sex with high risk groups etc.).For instance Teak in my research today, in my own country population 4 milion,250-300 Heterosexual males have contracted HIV since the 80's.I ask myself how many were Healthy Heterosexual males , and got it in a similar way to me. I think 10 would be a stretch. I am goin to put this one behind me.
Actually "Healthy" Heterosexual male is a term-it acts as a kind of a bench mark to non "Healthy" Heterosexual males as in those who have previous std’s .i.e. increasing chances of having weak genital skin or lesions/ long term HIV infected partner/sex with high risk groups etc. these Heterosexuals are statistically at a much higher risk then the healthy ones. One night, 1 of HIV infection does happen, but in most or all cases only if one of the above is present.
I actually havn't tested yet myself. Why you might ask? I get regularly screened for HIV typically on a yearly basis through flight physicals and the the dr. in the expert forum said my risk was low enough that it didn't constitute a special test and waiting for my next screen would be perfectly sufficient. He also said the result would be neg.
bottom line, can a typical hetero get HIV?.. yes, from one encounter? sure .. is it typical? according to the statistics and experts' experience not at all. The odds I see regularly quoted are between 1 in 100,000 to 1 in a 1,000,000 for this type of exposure. Low enough not to justify anxiety but high enough not to make a habit of it.
FYI - in my state 5% of all HIV cases are "reported" as heterosexual transmission in 2008.
All you need to know is one can contract HIV on the first exposure. You can quote all the numbers you like, but the only way to know your status is by testing.
I agree with you wholeheartedly, but in the meantime of waiting for test results numbers can be reassuring and allow some of us to function prior to receiving the final verdict. Especially for alot of the lower risk exposures on this forum.
