testing outside United States

hello,

first of, thanks to all for the responses in this forum.  I have read some of them and most of my concerns have been answered.

I have 3 questions :

1) I'd like to know if the rule of thumb of 3 month testing applies to all countries and all test types?
2) if so, what's the real standard? 12 weeks (84 days) or 90 days.  Is there a difference?
3) what could cause antibodies to be detected passed the 3 month period?.  I have no special condition at the moment. Notable Medical history : blood transfusion and  hep A when i was a kid (more than 25 years ago).

I live in El Salvador.  As per a friend's advice got tested at 84 days.  Results were negative. Method eia.

Lab People telling me keep testing monthly until 6 month.... apparently is country standard.

In your opinion, should I retest at 6 month? does my medical history matter with respect to the window period?

thank you all!

El Salvador
With less than 1 percent of its adult population reported to be HIV positive, El Salvador is a low-HIV-prevalence country, but the virus remains a significant threat in groups who practice high-risk behaviors, such as commercial sex workers and men who have sex with men. Overall prevalence has increased since the first case was detected in 1984. El Salvador has the second-largest number of people living with HIV/AIDS in Central America, behind Guatemala. As of November 2009, 23,731 HIV/AIDS cases have been reported in the country (National HIV/AIDS Program of the Ministry of Health). The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) estimates that in 2007, 35,000 Salvadorans were living with HIV (UNAIDS 2008 Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic). Incidence appears to have declined since 2004, but there is a fear that HIV/AIDS cases are underreported due to lack of an effective monitoring system.

El salvador has the second highest rates of HIV infection of all central American countries and they should know that testing at 6 months is not required at all.Your government has spent alot of money promoting safe sex in high risk areas, targeting high risk groups.0.8% of the population is HIV+.

Other countries sometimes have different guidelines simply due to different educational levels.

3 months is sufficient for the vast majority of the population to produce detectable antibodies.  A VERY small portion of the population would be advised to test to 6 months.  That would be people with severely compromised immune systems...people getting chemo, people taking anti rejection meds after an organ transplant, chronic IV drug abusers.

As for testing, there is no going to be a difference between 84 days or 90 days, either would be conclusive.
