That's not what the doctor's intent was in that message. Condoms are safe. What I get from that is that there is a minute possibility that the phenomenon exists but that is even further disqualified because people are more prone to provide inaccurate data than there is risk of that activity. In other words, more than likely most, if not all, of the recorded transmissions occurring with protected intercourse are probably incorrectly annotated in the first place. Bourne, if unprotected vaginal sex is a low risk and using a condom reduces that risk further, then seriously, do you think that you should be whiggin' out here? Relax bud.

I found this comment by Dr. HH regarding condoms and their suposed less than stellar effectiveness.

Can I (or anyone else) prove that nobody, anywhere, ever caught HIV despite correct use of a condom that remained intact?  Of course not.  You can imagine scenarios with herpes or other wounds of the skin that were exposed to secretions; of the penis sliding loosely inside the condom, with secretions being massaged down to the tip; and that sort of thing.  That one can imagine such a thing, however, does not mean that it happens with measurable frequency, and the data support the conclusion that it does not--or at least that such events occur too rarely to measure or to worry about.

The important factor in your question is that people's histories of condom use (or histories of any health behavior you can think of) can be wrong.  In studies like you cite, it is much more likely that those who caught or transmitted HIV simply forgot some unprotected exposures (perhaps especially for sex in combination with alcohol or drugs); simply lied (which sometiems happens because research subjects believe the researcher expects or hopes for a particular answer, or because they are embarrassed to admit they didn't follow advice); forgot about one or more unprotected exposures; or were saving face by not admitting other exposures (e.g., extramarital sex, sex with men, injection drug use, etc).  If you think about it, this makes a lot of sense, and you probably can think of other situations that would lead a researcher to record false information.

I hope this helps.  Thanks for the thanks about the forum.  Best wishes--  HHH, MD

Chapeau

Apparently you have a problem with reading chronicologically.  Thats ok though, I did report this thread. Hopefully that will will put an end to such antaganostic remarks. Because really, they are not helpful, and the purpose of this site is not to be a bashing ground for particular people. All should be welcomed.

I got a story for you:

I once was assisting a physician during a routine office procedure...  which involved a little pain.

And the patient was pretty elderly. The patient kept yelling G0d Dam% You over and over again. The physicians response was....

"For a person in your physical condition, I would think you would be a lot nicer to your fellow man."

Surely you could have found something more up to date, than an article dated 1999.

No condom burst nothing, plenty of lube, and no oral, no digital examination etc. The girl I was with knows I am very paranoid. She on the other hand...  not really. But she is supportive about my anxiety over it & does not request or pressure me not to use a condom. So that is why she had test results previous to us meeting, because she knows I am a worry wart. We see each other ever 3-4 months or so.

Truth is the squirts issue is bothering me too. I got to get to the bottom of this (no pun intended) because this really stinks (pun intended).  I needed to lose wieght, but I would rather do it in another way.  I don't want to gross anyone out here, but I was working out in fish hatchery tank, for the greater part of the day. I was cleaning the thing.

I may have accidently got some of the sludge into my mouth. Yea, I fell down, the bottom was really slippery. The diarhea started the next morning, I'd say about 8-12 hours after possible exposure. I also ate a cold steak that had been out for about 1 hour or so....

But again, onset after 3 weeks from a protected sexual incounter, coupled with slight nausea, but no rash, no fever, no pharyngitis, no fatigue, no night sweats, no joint pain, no muscle ache, no headaches....  pretty much normal. 30-60% of those with ARS reportedly have diarhea....  but come now.... wouldn't I have other symptoms too?

http://www.aafp.org/afp/990800ap/535.html

The deal is, where I live, anything is possible!  So I might go to a hospital today and give them a sample, see if they can find any bacteria that needs killing....

What's up everyone? Diarhea does not = HIV. LOL, sorry you got the squirts though man. Stress can do that to you. From what I understand, ARS is a significant illness and if you don't have several of the signs for a considerable amount of time, it probably isn't ARS. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I hope all you got is the comical squirts, my friend, but if your condom didn't bust, sure it isn't HIV.

What happened Teak is like a moth to a flame....  you know the rest.

But I used a condom correctly and consistantly. (to the best of my knowledge) I say to the best of my knowledge because heck what does correctly mean. All I can do is follow the instructions. The girl I know had tested negative a day previous to our contact. (I saw the results)

Now 3 weeks latter I have got watery diarhea (sp) been like this for at least 3 days now. No fever, (I do have slight nausea, no swollen glands, no muscle aches, no real fatigue issues, no sore throat nothing.  Just the runs. Speaking of which, nature calls.

Yes,

I love this study:

The protection that proper use of latex condoms provides against HIV transmission is most evident from studies of couples in which one member is infected with HIV and the other is not, i.e., "discordant couples." In a study of discordant couples in Europe, among 123 couples who reported consistent condom use, none of the uninfected partners became infected. In contrast, among the 122 couples who used condoms inconsistently, 12 of the uninfected partners became infected.

Teak is a mean machine with the links.

You talking about the 85-98% link.  No I don't think I kept it, but I believe I got it off the  info of the 'the body" site.  No details about the actual %. Fact is the doctors on the body explain it as liars involved in study etc.

I hate that 100% correctly clause. It seems to me that means left in wrapper, and pants left on clause.

But Teak thank you for that vote of support.  You have no idea how bad that is needed.

Have you ever heard of someone contracting HIV and using condoms suposedly correctly? The studies I have been seing are something like 85-98% effective outside of labratory conditions. I guess even if you heard about the occurance it would be like hearing a ghost storry, possible, but unbelievable?

Condoms are 100% if they are used correctly and consistantly.
