unprotected sex flu like symptoms

by luke74, Mar 05, 2009 07:25PM
I am a 19 year old male who has had unprotected sex a year ago with a female.  I have had unprotected sex 2 years ago and I know it was stupid of me to do so.  Anyways a week after I have had sex, I developed flu like symptoms that only lasted a few hours which i managed to sleep it off.  I became worried that I may have contracted HIV even though the flu like symptoms lasted a few hours.  So I read up online about HIV testing and decided to do an HIV test.  So i ordered the Home Access HIV test kit and I did a test at 6 months post exposure.  The result was negative and I did another test six months later which would be a year post exposure.  The two test results both came out negative to my disbelief.  My question is could I be infected with HIV even though I tested negative twice?  Or could I be infected with HIV type 2 strand?  Or can I feel comfortable with my test results?  If anyone has any information or input please comment on this situation. Thank you.

Symptoms are never a reliable indicator of a person's HIV status.  You can only judge based on risk.  You had unprotected vaginal intercourse; this is a risk.  Unprotected vaginal and unprotected anal intercourse carry risk for transmitting the HIV virus (the other way is IV drug works).  You, however, tested negative TWICE.  If you are so concerned about the reliability of the tests, get an HIV antibody test done at your local health department or university health center.  It will be a conclusive result, and it is highly likely that it will be a negative result.

Home Access is FDA approved and your negative test is reliable. You tested negative outside the window period. Use latex condoms correctly and consistently for anal and vaginal sex and you'll prevent the transmission of HIV.

Thanks guys but do you think there could be a possibility I was infected with the HIV-2 strain because the Home Access Kit only tests for HIV-1 strains?
