HIV PREVENTION EXPERT FORUM
what are my risks

what are my risks

I had an exposure today:
with a massage lady from Brazil claims that she doesn't have  HIV and seems to be healthy.
First - insertive sex with a condom for about 15 seconds. The condom might not have been down all the way (at least 75% down). right after wards I right away rubbed the entire penis with rubbing alchohol. After that she gave me an oral with condom fully on.

my question:
1. am I at risk for HIV?
2. what about other STD?
3. any test that I should do right away?
4. in general how safe are condoms to protect against std?

Thanks a lot,
Very nervous!

Welcome back to our Forum.  You have no risk for HIV or, for that matter, any other STD from the exposure you describe.  Most commercial sex workers do not have HIV or STDs and even if they do, most exposures to infected partners do not lead to infection.  In your specific case, your encounter was also condom protected and condoms represent highly effective protection from STDs, including HIV.  That the condom did not cover your entire penis does not change this.

As a matter of advice, I would not recommend using rubbing alcohol after worrisome exposures. the alcohol has a strong drying effect and can be irritating. Soap and water is actually more effective for killing and removing bacteria and viruses.

In answer to your specific questions:
1.  No, none.
2.  No, no STDs either.  while there may be a theoretical risk of STDs which can be spread through direct contact (herpes, syphilis, HPV) the fact and experience is that these too are virtually unheard of with proper use of a condom.  They are not worth worrying about or trying to test for.
3.  No, no testing is required.
4.  Highly effective and certainly more effective than any other preventative measure.

I hope these comments are helpful to you.  EWH

Thank you very very much!

3 small follow up questions:
1. so does rubbing alcohol increases my risk?
2. any symptoms that I should be on a lookout?
3. from your point of view - i can safely continue to have sex with my partner?

1. No, the rubbing alcohol does not increase your risk.
2.  No, looking for HIV symptoms is a waste of time.
3.  Yes, you can.

one more small question and that's it.

now after 4 hours since the exposure  I feel a little burning sensation in my penis.
can that be a symptom of any std or it's just from the alcohol rub?

I just want to make sure I got it right:
during the vaginal intercourse she was on top. Does that increase the risk?
also since it was only for 15 seconds and with a condom - i imagine the shorter the intercourse time the less the risk.Is that so?

Please, your anxiety over this exposure is not allowing you to hear what I told you.  You are not at risk from this exposure.  Postion does not make a difference.

STDs do not cause burning within hours of exposure.  This is the alcohol and your anxiety that are causing the sensations, not an STD.

Please no further anxiety driven questions. No Risk!!!
