Female Hair Loss

Since I was in high school I have had random bald spots about the size of a dime on my scalp. (I am now 26) The hair eventually grows back. There is no redness or itching. Then about 4 years ago I had my second child. I lost my "pregnancy hair" that grew while I was pregnant, but it never stopped. Four years later my hair still falls out in handfuls when I brush it (once or twice a day). When I pull my hair back into a hair tie I have noticed that my hair is only about half as thick as it used to be. This morning I noticed a red spot on my scalp about the size of a dime, but there is no hair loss on that spot. It is sore to touch but is not raised or itchy. Ideas?
