Too much iron causes hair breakage?

I have been having horrible hair breakage. Someone told me that it could be because of intaking too much iron. My doctor told me to take an iron pill every day (I had low iron from being a distance runner), plus I take a multi-vitamin with iron. Basically, I was getting about 45 mg a day (I am a 24 year old female) though pills! Now I know that was way too much. Does anyone know if the hair breakage could be a result of that? If so, now that I have stopped taking the iron pills, how long until my hair gets healthy again?
