can Self-UVB treatment work?

Hi, I am new to this forum and signed up to just ask this question.  I am 22 years old and have been living with alopecia areata my whole life.  I've never had a complete head of hair, usually 70% of it, with the rest in hidden patches, a very painful ordeal, especially going through school.  Anyways, I have been seeing the dermatologist for the past 2 years receiving UVB light treatment.  It has been working wonders!  I now have about 90% of my hair back, but unfortunately my insurance informed me they no longer cover UVB light treament :( .  I have done some research and it seems that they sell "reptile UVB lamps" for the use of keeping pet lizards.  They are only $30.  Can I use these low powered lights to treat my alopecia?  Comments, suggestions, all are welcome.
