hair loss over the body

Hi -
I am a 50 year old male that has experienced 80% hair loss on the scalp and body within the last 6 months. In Feb ruary I was under a tremendous amount of stress started brushing my hair vigorously and pulling it back with a brush. did i cause the hairloss to occur? i do not have alopecia areata accordingto my biopses?
