sudden hair loss in women

I am 44 and have suddenly started loosing my hair  from the roof in large amounts. I am now developing bald spots. It's very embarrasing! I am on no medication and eat healthy.

It could be "alopecia" which can be caused by stress.  I too had this at one time before I was ever put on meds.  All my tests came out o.k., no physical illness and the doctor and the dermatologist asked me if I was under a lot of stress or just got over a very stressful period in my life, I had, and that was the cause of my hairloss.

Thank you!   I too have been under a great deal of stress the past 5 months and that is relevant to the time that my hair loss began.  May I ask what was reccomended to stop the loss before I lose it all!

All the doctors told me to reduce my stress and my hair would stop falling out.  

I forgot to mention that menopause can also cause hair to fall out in some women, but you are to young for menopause.

I'm 25 years old and I've been losing alot of hair also in one specific area leaving a barebald spot on the back of my head it's about the size of a quarter or fifty cent coin. I have very short hair and if I lose any more it will be extremely visable. I am going through an extremely stressful time and the stress is unavoidable. What can I do aid hair growth that is uncostly and without a RX because I'm finically unable to pay for doctor appointments and RX. PLEASE some one help me
