Basal Skull Fracture with CSF leak treatment

by Jamee67, Aug 17, 2009 11:15PM
NEED HELP ASAP
My son had a motorcycle accident and had significant CSF leak from left ear. CT confirmed Basal Skull Fracture. CSF leak persisted for 5 days with no intervention other than antibotics via IV by the third day. On the 6th day, a drain was placed in his L3 in order to regulate the CSF leak and detour from his ear to give the fracture time to heal. The plan was to have a slow monitored leak and regulate the amount of CSF. He ordered he sit up no less than 30 degree angle and NO more than 15 ml CSF to drain within an hour.
Unfortunatley, a second doctor took over his care and felt a more aggressive measure was necessary. He ordered my son lay flat with a fast hard leak. This enduced major headaches which he prescribed 4 cc morphine every hour. The morphine did not work and so then 0.5 cc delaudid was given every 2-3 hours. The CSF leak from the ear had stopped within 8 hours.
Now the first doctor has come back in, unhappy with the course of treatment and still has my son laying flat and is still leaking at a rate of 20-25 ml per hour. He has ordered that he will continue to monitor the CSF collected. IF in two days, he is still leaking, they will clamp the drain to see if the leak from his ear has healed.
We are now on day 8 and NOT getting any information and NOW my son has begun to have head twitches and eyes rolling like the marble in a roulette wheel within the last 24 hours. They last 2-3 minutes at a time. He has had personality/ mood changes. I need to know why or what could be the cause? and a possible suggestion of treatment ASAP!!
