Can a brain shunt break?

by traveler58, Jul 11, 2009 10:56AM
I had brain surgery in 1998 with a shunt placement that goes down into my lower abdomen, due to a very large arachnoid cyst pushing in on my ventricles and pituitary.  Fortunately, the arachnoid cyst has shrunk, which was the hope at the time of the operation, however, I still have the shunt.  For approximately the last 4-5 months, I have been having a pain in my abdomen directly where the shunt is, whenever I move.
Is it possible for the shunt to break and and to have to have it removed?
Please help me, because I don't know what to do.  Thank you.
