Confused: Why does mixed hearing loss occur?

by Lourdes71, Nov 05, 2009 09:55PM
I have been diagnosed with mixed hearing loss and retrocochlear. I am curious to know if there is any surgery to correct my hearing?  Or is there ANYTHING I can do before buying expensive hearing aids?

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Mixed hearing loss is due to both conductive defect and sensory neural defect. The sensory neural defect lies behind the cochlea, which means in the auditory nerve and the passage of signals to the auditory centers in the brain.
Conductive hearing loss can be treated by surgery. So if the conductive component is more than the neuro-sensory component, going for a surgery or wax removal etc may help improve the hearing.
However, if the neuro-sensory component is much larger, only hearing aids will help. Discuss this with your specialist.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
