Prognosis after traumatic brain injury

by jeledaxi, Jan 17, 2009 06:54PM
Reference a 21 year old with a traumatic brain injury. He sustained his injury by falling from a 60 foot height 4 weeks ago, and still has a GCS of only 8. He has identified bleeding in his brain stem, and pockets of fluid in other parts of his brain also. As his eyes are open spontaneously, his other functions are very poor.

My questions is please, what is the likely prognosis for this young man, and at what point, if any, would surgery be appropriate? Also, what therapies could be employed other than auditory stimulation and regular physical therapy to aid in his recovery?

He did sustain other injuries during the fall, including leg fracture and a fractured pelvis.
