At birth, the human skull is made up of 45 separate bony elements. As growth occurs, many of these bony elements gradually fuse together into solid bone. The adult skull is normally made up of 28 bones and are joined together by sutures. Rigid articulations permit very little movement. This will not compromise skull strength. However, if it persists or other symptoms arise, have this evaluated further for proper management. Imaging modalities such as CT or MRI may also be indicated depending on the neurologic and physical examinations.
