Shallow fissure between skull plates.

by kinger2005, Apr 28, 2009 02:01AM
Recently, I've been noticing more, this fissure along the back-right of my skull. I've had it for as long as I can remember. It does not hurt. But is it detrimental and/or will it effect my health lter in my life? Will it compromise skull strength?

Hi,

Can you elaborate on the fissure at the back of your head? Are there other symptoms noted? The skull is pretty much developed at birth.   At birth, the human skull is made up of 45 separate bony elements. As growth occurs, many of these bony elements gradually fuse together into solid bone. The adult skull is normally made up of 28 bones and are joined together by sutures.  Rigid articulations permit very little movement. This will not compromise skull strength. However, if it persists or other symptoms arise, have this evaluated further for proper management. Imaging modalities such as CT or MRI may also be indicated depending on the neurologic and physical examinations.

Take care and regards.
