Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Yes, a TBI can cause loss of taste and smell. This can be a part of concussion. If this is so, there is a chance of recovery once the effects of concussion wear off, which may take a few years at times. Also the loss of smell could be due to injury to the nose causing a blockage inside the nose. Hence an ENT consultation is a must to rule this out.
The other possibility is injury to nerves or the center in the brain. Generally the taste goes away because of loss of smell. Injury to olfactory (related to smell) nerves, olfactory bulb in the brain, frontal and/or temporal lobes of the brain can all result in loss of smell. The injury can be in form of contusion or hemorrhage or damage to the nerves.
A detailed examination by an otolaryngologist or head and neck doctor is a must to rule out any serious injuries and to detect any possibility that could be corrected. For these people, it is important to install smoke detectors at home.
It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
So many of us have no taste or smell. It is really odd to operate without 2 or our senses.
I'm sure you've been to many doctors. I fell while ice skating 2 weeks ago and hit the back of my head very hard. I have 0% taste and smell. It's very depressing. So many people out there without these senses after head trauma. 5 years is unimaginable. Does your son eat well? Is he in treatment for depression? How does he manage? Good luck to you, Maggie
