infant skull fracture

infant skull fracture

Hello.  I posted a question in the Undiagnosed forum, but I suppose that was the wrong one to use. Anyhow, I have a 13 month old that fell down 15 carpeted stairs and hit her head on our laminate floor at the bottom of them about 3 weeks ago.  She got an x-ray that revealed a linear skull fracture in the right parietal region about 4 cm long.  She did not get a CT as Dr. says that it would require sedation, and since she did not lose conscienceness or have any abnormal behavior or sleeping issues afterward that it was not neccessary as the chances of bleeding in the brain were slim.  She did develop a hematoma over the area though that seemed to have gotten softer, then firmer with palpable hard bumps around the periphery...calcifications?  Upon examination last week, pediatrician mentioned the possiblility of an encephalocele if the next xray done next month doesn't show proper healing.  If she had an encephalocele wouldn't she be showing abnormal behavior?  What is the likelyhood that one has developed?  Please help...worried.  Also, another Dr. mentioned that the hematoma could take as long as a year or more to heal?  Thanks for your response.

Dear Tina,

The possibility of an encephalocele having developed, though thin, cannot be ruled out. In the initial phases, specially in a young child, symptoms may not be clearly noticable. Please do not get worried. Regular treatment will, I am sure, be helpful.
