about the calcinosis. I was recently diagnosed by a neurologist with calcinosis of the brain, especially the cerebellum. I am 60 and female. I have no symptoms except for slurred speech. I was told that it would get progressively worse, but slowly. This was a month ago and no change yet. Good luck...Paula
hey i am back and got some worrying news, i went for a MRI and eventhough there is no report yet, i asked the radiologist and he said there is more of those calcifications that are a worry. he couldn't confirm how large they are but i am guessing they are larger than the one i mentioned before hand. it sort of worries me that this could be worse than i expected, my question now is should i be worried and what measures might be taken now if it is the worst. thanks and i will keep u posted in the mean time
Thanks for your comment. i do in fact have mild form of rheumatoid arthritis, but couple times in the past i have had high levels of calcium and phosphates, this was when i was treated for iron definciency, which i am still been treated for. Can that contribute to the problem of having these deposits in and around the brain? at the the moment i am clueless about what is going on and trying to piece the puzzle to why i am getting these problems. Can there be other reasons to why people like me get these deposits and if so can other problems arise from what i am having at the moment. thanks again and hope you will get back to me asap.
Hello,
The headache and neurological symptoms that you are having may be related to the calcium deposits in the cerebellum. These deposits are pressing upon the vessels of the brain and the brain stem causing headaches and tremors.
This condition of having calcium in the soft tissue is called calcinosis. It is usually of two types:dystrophic and metastatic.Dystrophic is more common and in this isolated calcium deposits are found in the body without any rise in calcium or phosphorus in blood.Usually associated with rheumatoid arthritis, lupus or scleroderma.
Metastatic calcinosis is caused by the presence of too much calcium and/or phosphate in a person’s blood. As a result, calcium deposits tend to build quickly and readily in several different areas of the body.
The main cause of this type is failure of the kidneys, which are unable to rid the body of excess calcium and phosphates. Overstimulation of the thyroid gland can create too much calcium and phosphates in the blood as well. Ingestion of too much Vitamin D may be a causal factor. Also, diseases that destroy bone tissue, like Pagets Disease or various bone cancers can cause metastatic calcinosis.
Firstly, the cause of these cacific deposits has to be found out.Treatment will depend on the cause.Pls consult a neurologist for that.
Take care and pls do keep us posted on how you are doing.
