removel of skull bone

removel of skull bone

I had a motorcycle accident 6/ 06.  I lost bone on right side of head. this was replaced with mesh.  Neurosurgen removed bone on left side because of swelling.  I went without bone until 8/06.  It was put back in.  10/08 I got as I call it, a zit on scar tissue on left side. Went to neurosurgen. Did surgery 1/09. cleaned up infection.  Infection came back 8/09.  Went for testing.  Now dr. want to remove the bone that was put back in. He will not do acrylic costum made plate.  Said it could be rejected.  Dr. wants to put in mesh. What options do I have?  I don't know if I can emotionlly handle this.  What would my skull look like?  Thank you for your time

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
I would suggest you consult another neurosurgeon. A CT scan should be done to assess if there is deep seated infection. Yes, bone implants are often used in neurosurgery to cover holes in the skull. However, they are usually successful in small holes. The other possibility is to remove this bone and put it back after the infection is controlled. The third possibility is a bone graft. Without actually examining the problem, it is difficult to comment on net. Please discuss these options with your doctor. If the gap left by bone removal will not be much and the mesh will be placed, then also the skull will retain its contour. Cosmetic correction can be tried. Again as I said earlier, it is difficult to comment for sure on net. Also check and see whether you have diabetes. This could also cause recurrent infections.
Hope this helps. Take care!
