Afraid of rate increase...

I've been self insured for 3 years, since retiring early.  I have been paying the lowest rate available since I have been healthy with no medical problems and take no prescription medications.  I recently had a successful cardiac ablation, after a couple of months of experiencing SVT.  My EP specialist has told me that I have a normal, healthy heart and that a return of SVT is only 2%.  My question is this, will my insurance company look upon this as a medical condition and increase my rate?  I don't want to be labeled with a "heart problem" and pay a lot extra for a problem that has been "ablated".   Do you think a letter from my EP specialist would be helpful in sending to my insurance company (a blue cross)?

Dear pg1949,

I am assuming that when you say you have been self insured, you mean that you have an Individual Health Insurance Policy (with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield). If my assumption is valid, you don't have to be concerned about getting a rate increase, based on your recent claims. It is not a common practice by Individual/Family plans; to single out a member on the basis of their claims & your rate increase should be the same as any other member based on your age group & County of residence.
However, keep in mind that if you ever decide to switch to a different Insurance Carrier or plan & have to be underwritten again, the new Carrier may have concerns about your procedure, regardless of what your EP specialist writes.

Sincerely,

Amir Mostafaie
