Best option for newly divorced woman

My girlfriend is going through a divorce and will need to get health insurance for her and her 17 year-old daughter (the man she's divorcing is not the father of this daughter so she can't stay on his insurance).  She works part-time for a school district and it's going to cost her $600 a month to go with their plan.  She only takes home about $1200 a month as it is so that is a mighty big premium for her.

I've looked at policy's on-line that she could get for around $300 per month but they all have duductibles that are anywhere from $1500 to $10,000.   Am I missing something here, or wouldn't it be better for her to save the $300 a month and go with one these policy's and pay for a few doctor's appointments a year at least until she's in a better position to pay for
the one through work.

Any suggestions or opinions would be appreciated.

Dear SDAndy,

Not knowing where exactly your friend & her daughter live, I took the liberty & ran some quotes in your San Diego county & found health plans with deductibles as low as $400 for as low as $83 a month for a 17 year old female (didn’t have your friend’s age so wasn’t able to run a quote for her).

The 17 year old may also be eligible for a publicly sponsored plan. Foundation for Health Coverage Education (www.coverageforall.org) can help determine her eligibility.

Without knowing more details about their needs & situation I am unable to recommend a plan, but it is always better to have some insurance even with a higher deductible than have no insurance at all. Your friend can speak to a licensed agent that represents the leading insurance carriers to find out what plan/carrier offers the best value in a plan that meets their needs. You can use the link on the top left corner of this page to see over 100 plans & call the toll free number to speak to a licensed agent if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Amir Mostafaie
