Can I get dental insurance right now?

by heart2heart, Feb 08, 2009 01:32PM
Hello, I have a question regardinig dental insurance. My husband and I were covered by dental insurance until Dec. but then he was laid off. We decided not to take it under Cobra. I do not have any dental insurance right now and I am on Medicare and SSDI. My husband is still unemployed. Last night a chunk of one of my teeth broke off and I don't know if I can afford to go to the dentist now, it might not be able to be filled and I may need a root canal. Something I cant afford. Please, do you have any ideas on what I can do as far as dental insurance right now? I live in the state of Illinois.

Dear heart2heart,

You can certainly purchase dental insurance at any time, however most dental insurance plans impose a waiting period on major dental work like root canals. For more immediate dental work, you may be better off looking into a dental discount card and your dentist office should be able to tell you which discount cards are best accepted in their office. Please note that dental discount cards are different from insurance in that they don't actually pay towards your claim, instead they get you a discount towards your bills, when you use an in-network provider.
If your dentist recommends Aetna or Assurant discount cards, you may be able to find them through the “Get Quote” link on the top left corner of this page.

Sincerely,
