Daughters insurance

My daughter 23 yr old daughter is no longer covered by my medical insurance. She is living on her own now and only has a minimum paying job 4 days a week. What can she do for medical coverage? No way can she (nor I ) afford insurance for her.
Thankyou

Dear Spud133,

Depending on where you live, you first need to find out is she qualifies for any publicly assisted programs. You can start by checking the "Foundation for Health Coverage Education" (a non profit organization) at http://www.coverageforall.org/our_services.htm#apps to see what programs are available in your/her area. If she doesn't qualify for any publicly assisted programs, she can look into an Individual policy.

It’s hard to make a specific recommendation without more information.  What kind of coverage is important to her?  Does she visit the doctor frequently?  Then she would need a more comprehensive plan which would cost her more in monthly premium.
If she doesn’t visit the doctor frequently at all and/or not on prescription drugs, then she may want to consider a higher deductible plan that may cost less on a monthly basis.  You’ll pay out of pocket for more things, but you’ll still have a valuable layer of protection in case of an unexpected injury or hospitalization.  Also - Does she expect to have employer coverage within six months?  Then she may actually prefer a short-term health insurance plan. Whatever you do...don't let her go without coverage.

One of the most common questions posted in this Forum is "I ended up in the ER without any insurance & have $1000s worth of bills, what do I do? Well here is your chance to do something before it's too late.

I’d recommend that you talk with a licensed agent who represents multiple insurance companies in your area.  It doesn’t cost anything extra and it can provide you with a broader view of the options available.  To check out your options for yourself, you could also visit a licensed online agency, like eHealthInsurance - where I work.  Through our site, you can get free quotes and compare plans side by side to find the best match for you needs.  If you have any questions about the plans or process, you can talk with one of our licensed agents at 1-800-977-8860.

Hope that helps.

Good luck,

Amir Mostafaie
