Extremely worried about rape exam coverage

Extremely worried about rape exam coverage

I called my insurance company and they said that since I am an adult, my parents will not know I was attacked if the hospital bills my parents' insurance.  I would like it that way because no good would come from my parents knowing I was attacked.

My insurance company also told me that I am under such a plan that if I pay the ER the co-pay, then they will pick up the rest of the tab.  However, the last time I was in a hospital, I had gone to the emergency room for an x-ray.  Apparently the x-ray wasn't entirely covered by our health insurance because I received a call from the billing department asking for $97.00.  She had called my father too.

I did not get an entire rape kit done and I am worried about what my insurance company may/may not cover.  I was given Plan B, HIV prophylaxis, antibiotics, and nausea medicine.  Is the insurance going to see and not cover this  I told my parents I went to the hospital due to a migraine/nausea.  They bought it.

The last time I spoke with the woman at the registration desk, she said that they were NOT going to bill the insurance OR the address I provided (which was my friend's).  I didn't get it writing, she just told me over the phone.  She called me, I didn't call her.  However, I called billing just to make sure.  They said the bill was on "hold" and it looked like they were trying to get my exam costs covered by a grant or fund.  They said they had seen other bills covered in such a way.

I have heard of many assault victims getting screwed over by this... and don't know who to trust.  Any enlightenment on this subject would be helpful.

Dear michaelaxx,

I recommend getting in touch with the billing department of the hospital/ER and verify again that you are extremely concerned with the privacy of your care. Get the name of the person & the phone number & document your conversation with time/date. I would call them every couple of weeks until this bill is settled & remember to document every interaction with the name & number of the person you speak with.

Sincerely,
