Genetic Testing

I have been advised by my orthopedic doctor to have a genetic test done (skin biopsy). She is trying to figure out if I have a mild form of Ostogenesis Imperfecta or Ehlers Danlos Syndrome or something else. I am wondering if the results show that I do have a genetic disorder if my insurance company can deny coverage because of a "pre-existing" condition? Your help is appreciated, Jen

Dear jpringle,

If you are already enrolled in a health insurance plan, health issues that appear after your enrollment should not be considered pre-existing conditions to your current health plan.
A pre-existing condition is defined as an illness or injury for which the covered person received medical treatment or advice from a physician preceding the covered person's effective date; or that produced signs or symptoms preceding the covered person's effective date.
Individual & privately purchased plans can consider your condition pre-existing should you decide to change your coverage and/or obtain new coverage for yourself in future. Please note this concern doesn't apply to Group/Employer sponsored plans.

Sincerely,

Amir Mostafaie
