Going directly to a specialist?

Can I go directly to see a specialist and still get covered by my insurance or do I need to get a referral from my GP?

Greetings Mark,

With most HMOs, a patient may be required to obtain a referral from the primary care physician (PCP) to visit a specialist for additional services and even though PPOs don’t generally require referrals, a specialist may need preauthorization for certain procedures.
So it would be best to contact your Insurance Carrier & find out what type of plan you have & if they require referrals.

Wish you best of health.

Hi, Mark.

You need to check with your insurance provider and ask them what your policy states. Also, some specialists, won't accept an appt. without a referral.
