Growth Hormone

Hi-
I am panhypopituitary and take Growth Hormone and other meds for this. My Primary Med Insurance a BC/BS PPO in Hawaii categorizes the GH as a "medical therapy". Because of this I have to pay a high deductible (10% of the cost) vs the co payment that I have for other meds like DDAVP, Thyroid, HRT, cortisol etc $5-$10. Growth Hormone costs ~$1,200/month, so that 10% copayment adds up.

I am also disabled so I have Medicare. Medicare does not categorize GH as a medical therapy but as a medication. So I could get a Rx part D plan to offset my copays. BUT, Medicare categorizes the GH as a medicine and BCBS categorizes it as a medical therapy. SO I find myself in a Catch 22 and there is conflict or a “disconnect” between my two forms of health insurance.

I wonder if this is right and if you have any ideas on what I could do. I did write to the Medical Director of my BC/BS and he skirted the issue and pretty much said that this is how it is and that they will not reclassify GH as a medication. It just does not seem right to me.

Thanks
