Health Insurance for Canadians wanting procedure in U.S.

What type of health insurance is available to a Canadian wanting bow leg correction surgery with Dr. Dror Paley in MD or Dr. J. Dean Cole in FL? Are there any specific international medical insurance carrier(s) that you recommend? Has anyone successfully done this through B.C.’s MSP?

Thank you.

Dear Intrigued1,

I am no expert in the Canadian health care system but if I had to go about finding out if what you want is possible, I would start with MSP (Medical Service Plan)!

My understanding is that in B.C. physicians/providers, subscribe to a web-based telecommunications system/service called Teleplan to verify patient’s eligibility. They also use the same service to file claims after providing services. The physicians you mentioned are Florida based providers & wouldn’t have access to Teleplan for either pre-authorization or filing claims.

I recommend contacting MSP (you can reach them toll free at 1-800-663-7100 from anywhere in North America) & discuss your options.

Sincerely,

Amir Mostafaie

Hello Amir,

Thanks for the reply. MSP stated they generally won't cover an out of country procedure unless its not available in Canada. Is there any international medical insurance (ex. Lloyd's of London etc) that you recommend? Thanks again.
