Hi everyone,

I live in Kentucky & I have a pre-existing condition of Cushing's. I've been denied before for private insurance and have been told I wouldn't qualify anyway because of my various maladies.

My husband owns his own business; I can't work because of my condition. He cannot just let go of his business and get a job. The only way we could get group insurance is if we hired someone and paid them money that we cannot afford. He is a company of one employee (himself).

I've spoken with people at the SSA in my county and they said I needed to fill out an application for assistance but that it would take 3-4 months for approval or denial and that even if I was approved I would most likely have to find an in-state doctor for my care. I need brain surgery & the type I need is so delicate that there are only a few neurosurgeons in the US that do it. The closest one to where I live is in Virginia. So I would have to travel out of state for care and they said they it most likely wouldn't be covered.

There is Kentucky Access Insurance. It is for high risk people who cannot get insurance privately. They would cover my bills in and out of state (75% anyway), but they cost $500.00/month. I can't afford that. $500/month PLUS 25% of the remaining bill.

I am so confused and do not know what to do.

Does anyone have advice for me? I've been told my condition is serious and life threatening and that I need the surgery asap.

Thank You in advance.

Dear cushings,

In a situation like this, it is best to tap into all resources. That is apply for SSA (even if it takes 3-4 months) & while your application is being processed, see if you can get enrolled in Kentucky Access (you can call them at 1-866-405-6145). You may be able to get your surgery done under Kentucky Access & rest of your treatment through SSA.

If you are required to take medications & can’t afford it, visit  www.NeedyMeds.com to  find ways to get your meds at either very low or sometimes even no cost at all.

Sincerely,

If it is available in your area, Blue Cross Blue Shield does not disqualify based on pre-existing conditions.  The premiums are based on age and are pretty reasonable.  I was turned down for health insurance because of a pre-existing condition as well and was told that BC/BS would not turn down due to health conditions.
