Pre-Condition (Pregnancy) - Insurance Plans Coverage

Pre-Condition- Insurance Coverage
I am Indian and currently in India, travelling with my wife in June month to USA to Seattle Area[ Redmond]. Looking for better Insurance as my wife is carrying 6month.
When i talked to couple of folks, it was told that no insurance covers with pre-existing conditions. We will be here for rest of the year. Can Insurance companies cover as normal or any specific insurances i need to look for.

Please do direct me appropriately.

Thanks

Dear Sreevani348,

In the State of WA, all carriers use the same standard health questionnaire to determine if they can accept or deny you. The good news is that the questionnaire doesn’t inquire about the applicant being pregnant. So she is not going to be denied health insurance solely based on her being pregnant. Also WA State mandates that Pre-natal & Post-natal care has to be covered according to the plan benefits & regardless of prior coverage.  However the Individual & Family plans WILL NOT cover the delivery (child birth) unless the applicant has had 9 months of prior coverage (which seems to be the case with your wife). So you will have to pay for the delivery out of pocket.

One way around this is to enroll both of you in a group sponsored health plan, if your employee offers one. Most group plans don’t impose a waiting period on pre-existing conditions.

Sincerely,

Amir Mostafaie
