Rare Vascular Malformation

Rare Vascular Malformation

I am a healthy(for the most part) 26yr old male. I am about 5'8" and weigh about 240lbs. About 5 yrs ago I finally went to the doctor and had my leg checked out because my left calf was larger than the other and didn't respond well to physical activity. To make a long story short, I have a  rare vascular malformation in my left calf roughly the size(5 yrs ago) of a grapefruit. At the time I was informed that due to the "generally cosmetic" nature of my issue the risk to benefit ratio wasn't high so I opted to wait. My issue is that now it is 5 yrs later and my leg is in almost constant pain and discomfort and seems much larger. Does anyone have any suggestions? Honestly, I can't afford to pay for it myself. Are there suggestions for insurance options?

Dear Gravycakes,

It sounds like you already have existing coverage but your current insurance is not covering the procedure that is needed to correct the vascular malformation. In my experience you need to make a compelling case with your doctor and demonstrate that this is causing you pain & ask him for a remedy (if not surgery then what?). In most cases if the doctor deems a procedure to be “medically” necessary, the insurer covers it.

Please make sure all necessary pre-authorizations are completed before you go forward with the treatment, that way you won't have any issues with the claims later.

Sincerely,

Amir Mostafaie
