Reached my max out of pocket yet I keep getting bills?

I have Blue Shield PPO 500 plan.

In March I had stitches in my finger which cost some cash. Then in April I tore 3 ligaments in my right shoulder. I had to have 2 operations and everything that goes along with it.

So far I have more than $7k in bills that are my responsibility. But the individual max out of pocket is $5k on the account with the Deductible
being $500.

So when my wife called, Blue Shield said both her and I have to meet the $500 deductible for the individual max out of pocket to kick in??? Does this sound right to anyone?
