Should we take an HSA?

Should we take an HSA?

My husband is expecting to be laid off in the next quarter. The COBRA is very expensive - over $500 a month. He is reasonably healthy and in his mid 40's. I'm only worried about his driving habits (he gets stressed behind the wheel) and the possibility of any collisions while running all around looking for work. Should we take an HSA which would be cheaper and could save us money or take a more conventional insurance or stick to the COBRA??

Dear heart2heart2,
You need to start with getting some quotes for HSA plans in your area. You can get free quotes at www.ehealthinsurance.com by providing your zip code & date of birth. Feel free to call eHealth at 1-800-977-8860 & ask for a licensed agent if you have questions. When getting quotes, you have to decide what level of deductible you want (plan deductible ranges from $2200-$10000). One thing to consider is that with HSA plans you have to meet the plan deductible before your plan starts paying for claims due to illness & injury where majority of COBRA plans tend to be more comprehensive & cover some benefits even before your deductible is met.

Sincerely,
