Son 19, still in high school, no insurance

We live in WA and my husband had lost his job and we were able to get state insurance for our family. We had it for all our family members, but my son turned 19 last month but is still in high school.  He has no insurance now. Where can we go to get insurance for him that we can afford? He is an athlete who was in the middle of physical therapy and this will affect his athletic scholarship for college; he would lose it. We are desperate to find some help

Dear maurice19,

I recommend starting with checking into Foundation For Health Coverage Education which is committed to help individuals like yourself figure if/what publicly sponsored program they qualiffy for.

You can visit their website using the following link (copy & paste into your browser); http://coverageforall.org/pdf/matrix/WA_Matrix.pdf or you can call them at 1-800-234-1317 to find out information specific to your state.

If you find out that your son doesn’t qualify for any of the publicly sponsored programs, you can visit www.ehealthinsurance.com to see individual health insurance plans offered by the leading health insurance carriers in your state. For instance in the Seattle area I ran a quote for a 19 year old & I got plans starting from around $52 per month. Now I am not suggesting that you enroll him in the least expensive plan especially since he is currently going through some treatment. Instead look at the plan details & choose a plan that fits his needs. You can call eHealth & speak with a licensed agent if you have questions about the health plans or the application process (you can apply right online once you find a plan that you like).

Sincerely,

Amir Mostafaie
