Healthier alternative meal after surgery

Healthier alternative meal after surgery

I recently had a surgical procedure called a Nissen Fundoplication to control GERD as well as arrest what is called Barrett's Esophagus, a precancerous condition.  The procedure involves cutting the top of the stomach and wrapping the dissected material around the esophagus... needless to say, diet after the surgery is challenging, and for quite a while.  Complicating the diet issue, I have heart problems that call for a low fat, low salt diet.  Finding foods that I could eat have been quite a challenge.

I found this meal that I could digest, and was fairly heart healthy:

I heat a can of Campbell's Chicken Noodle Reduced salt soup.  Once it is heated, I carefully drain away the liquid, which contains a lot of salt, and pour the contents into a bowl.  I mix in about 1 or 2 oz of Albacore Tuna, crumble up about ten no salt 'saltine' crackers, and sprinkle a bit of parmesean cheese over the top.  I mix, then re-heat for a short time in the microwave oven.   The result is an easily digestible, lower salt/fat tuna casserole of sorts.  Hardly a meal fit for a king, but it sure helps me along a difficult dietary road to recovery.

Low fat, low salt and easily digestible foods are difficult to come by, this works.

if your fundo is too tight for you to eat most of your regular foods, let the surgeon know. they can easily dilate you in the office to make it easier for you to eat more :)

beans, beans and more beans I always say!!!  good sources of protein and naturally high in nutrients and low fat :)

My problem is capacity, I seem to be able to get down foods without a problem. Because my stomach capacity is smaller, I've had to learn to eat much smaller amounts and above all, avoid gassy or carbonated food/drink.   Actually, beans and complex carbs are my worst enemy.  It is only two months since my surgery and was warned to avoid beans, brown rice, and complex carbs for quite a while.  Like you, I'm a big fan of beans, and did I suffer when I ate them.  Anything that causes gas after a Fundo is a big problem, believe me!  Beans are an absolute no-no.

Check out this link. I really don't know anything about what you have had done. This link has a sample menu on the last page. It looks like breakfast and lunch are no problem probably just trying to make a dinner that resembles a real sit down meal. I think it will depend on your taste.

Homemade potato soup or squash seems to be a go if you can get the seeds out. What about a homemade sheppards pie? Made with lean ground beef and homemade mashed potatoes and some mild cheese like, brick? Your tuna casserole is good and I think you can do it with chicken long as it's ground. You could use a low sodium cream soup and over cook your noodle a little. You could also add a veggie like carrots. What about creamed beef over white rice. I used to make it when my daughter was little and you can make it as bland as you want.

I hope this helps a little and hope your doing well.
