Ear infections

Hi my 10 year old son has been having recurrent era infections , grommets failed few years ago , has required oral antibiotics on few occasions ,.
He has been having regular hearing tests every 3-4 months with follow ups with ent specialists.
Today had hearing test which shows hearing loss not to one but both ears and on examination shows retracted ear drums .
The ent doctor told me that at some stage my child would require a mastoidectomy as he has a retracted ear drum .
I'm devastated I would like advise on other options or even a lesser invasive surgery . Please help .
Would be grateful for any advise . Thank you
