HEARING LOSS IN A CHILD

One of my twin sons is 6 years old and has had a problem of offering his right ear for hearing. We got an audiogram done today where the doctor said that he might be having a hearing loss of upto 95% in one ear. The doctor has advised us to go for BERA test, which would be confirmatory for the same.

My questions are:

a) Is BERA the right approach?
b) Is there a possibility of some surgery by which the condition can be improved as hearing aids etc. would be too inconvenient and even otherwise too saddening for everyone in case of such a small child?

Please advise as we are totally shattered.
