Do you have tinitus (ringing / noise in ear) and feeling of fullness/pressure in the ear? If yes then hearing aids or BAHA will be of no benefit.

It depends how much hearing you have left and when it is high or low frequency. Can you hear anything at all with that ear?

Hearing aids work by making sounds louder. If you have some hearing left, a hearing aid might be a good option. They have some nice-looking ones these days. Smaller than ever, too.

You want to get a hearing aid from an audiologist, not from Costco, Miracle Ear, etc. Go to a hearing center in a hospital, if you are not sure.

Hearing aids help more when you have better hearing with higher pitches. They can make low-pitched sounds louder easier than they can make high-pitched sounds louder.

A CROS hearing aid is another option. You were devices in both ears. The bad ear transmits the sound (using bluetooth or similar) to the good ear. The only downside is that the good ear is now blocked and has to use a microphone to hear the sounds on both sides. Some people feel it helps, some don't.

If you don't have enough hearing left to benefit from hearing aids, a BAHA is a good option. It is totally different from hearing aids. It is a surgical option. They put a little device in the bone behind your bad ear. It has a piece that attaches to your head, which takes in the sounds and turns them into vibrations. The vibrations go to your good ear. Bones are good at carrying vibrations. So your good ear gets the sound from the side that can't hear, and then you don't miss things happening on that side. A lot of people like their BAHAs, because after a while your brain thinks you can still hear on the bad side.

Obviously you would want to give it some time before going for a BAHA--6-12 months at least. Make sure your hearing is stable.

But a hearing aid can just be taken off or adjusted to fit your hearing if it changes. I would give it another month and then ask for one. They can be pricey, but most insurance plans cover hearing aids, so check with your insurance. They tend to pay for a new one every three years.

Google Phonak or Oticon to see what hearing aids look like today. Phonak's Naida is a good choice if you have significant hearing loss--like if you can't hear anything unless it's really loud. Can't hear voices. Oticon's Alta would be similar.

Please keep us posted on how you are doing! Take care.

Hi and welcome to the Hearing Loss community.

I am sorry you have lost hearing. :( There is still a chance of recovery after two months, but do consider your options in case it doesn't come back. Doctors do not understand all of the causes of sudden hearing loss, so it is hard to predict who will recover their hearing and how much.

Did the audiologist give you any advice or suggestions? Are you a candidate for a hearing aid or BAHA?
