There are medications that have been studied that have shown to improve mortality in patients with a low ejection fraction. These would include beta blockers, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors), and aldosterone antagonists. If not done already, he should be seen/followed by a cardiologist who can make recommendations for some/all of these medications depending on what type of symptoms he has. Also, it would be important to know the cause of his low heart function to see if there are any available therapies that can be pursued.
