15 year old diagnosed with enlarged mitral valve

by kimmwe, Nov 14, 2002 12:00AM
My 15 year old daughter has been tired and nausea on and off for a week now. She has been feeling so crummy she missed three days of school and had me pick her up from outings with friends twice. This is not like her at all so, I took her to the doctors.
During the exam the doctor noticed a skipping while listening to her heart. She gave her an ekg and the result came back showing an enlarged mitral valve. She then was sent for a chest X-Ray and had a 24hr. holter monitor put on. So far the results are not back yet.
My question is this, should I be worried and what is the next step to be taken if the results do come back abnormal?

Dear kimmwe,

Sorry to hear about your daughter's fatigue. One can not accurately diagnose a mitral valve disorder from an ECG.
Your daughter needs an echocardiogram which will better characterize her mitral valve. I would recommend seeing a cardiologist with the results of her ECG, Chest X-ray and holter monitor.

Thanks,
