7 year old with sudden onset...

by DENISE, Aug 15, 1999 12:00AM
My 7 year old daughter went to the pediatrician two weeks ago with chest pains, fatigue, and headaches.  The headaches had been present for over two weeks, the fatigue and chest pains for 2 days.  Chest x-rays were taken, all looked good, and we were sent home feeling as if we weren't really taken seriously.

Last night, she was at the dinner table after watching a movie.  After a few bites, she said "maybe if I have ice cream after dinner, it will cool my heart off".  Her heart was pounding so hard that it was visible from across the table!!!

We went to the local ER, she was immediately placed on a monitor, and the bpm went from 189 to 201 until she was given a med called Adenosine (sp?).  It calmed almost immediately, dropping back to around 99 to 102.  She was given a liter of fluids, and we were sent home.  The blood work all looked normal, with very slight dehydration.

We will be visiting our pediatrician tomorrow, and I was just wondering if there is anything I can bring up in our discussion that will help him see what happened, and to ensure that everything is covered.  I'm not in panic mode, but would like to feel as if her heart is given a little more serious consideration this visit.

There was a cardiologist in the ER last night.  He said that there is no way to know what caused it, why it happened, and no reason for excessive concern.  Isnt' there ANYTHING else to look for?  ANY explanation at all to hope for?

Thank you...  posts can also be sent to me at

Dear Denise

It sounds like she may have had an SVT, a supraventricular tachycardia. The recent illness and dehydration may have triggered this event. An evaluation by a pediatric cardiologist might be useful. Be sure to bring the records form the emergency room so that the cardiologist can see what the heart rhythm was before and after the adenosine.

I hope this has been useful. I wish you the best of luck. Feel free to write back.
