8 Year Old with Severe WPW Syndrome

by Kiley__0, Sep 02, 1998 12:00AM

Are there more risks involved when a child is diagnosed with WPW Syndrome?  My sister is 8 years old and was recently diagnosed with, what the cardiologist referred to as, a severe case of WPW Syndrome.  She is now on an event monitor for 3 weeks, and will be given an echocardiogram after.  The cardiologist also stated that she suspects that there may be other problems as well.  Any ideas on what else she may be looking for?  Thanks!

Dear Kiley
WPW can be life-threatening and should be taken seriously. Occasionally, WPW is associated with structural abnormalities of the heart, such as tricuspid valve disease, that can be detected on an echocardiogram. The prognosis is worse if there is associated structural heart disease. It is therefore important to do an echo.
I hope this is useful. Feel free to write back. I wish you the best of luck.
If you would like to set up an appointment with one of our cardiologists here at the Cleveland Clinic please feel free to call 1-800-CCF-CARE.
