A-Fib Rythmonorm

by scouser costa rica, Feb 22, 2007 12:00AM
My EP and cardio doctor are reccomending that I take 2 150mg Rytmonorm daily to control my weekly paraoxysmal events,in order to get me off amiodarone. Can I get some input on this.
                                            Thanks Ian

Hi Ian, if I'm not wrong, you have the pacemaker same as mine one.  Your model is newer than mine.

Why the pacemaker didn't pace out of your A-Fib?  My cardio shocked me once (at his office).  It went nice and quiet...  When I walked through the door, the train came....  It always after the train, the elephant comes and sits for few hours.  Do you have that feeling too?

I wasn't need any beta-blocker and blood thinner.  Pacemaker will do all the jobs.  My ECG alway showed LBBB.  Medhelp doc said, "pacing the right ventricle will cause LBBB".  Are yours one like that too?

Rythmonorm is essentially rythmol, the same antiarrhythmic I take-- different brands. The active ingredient in both is propafenone.  In the case of rythmonorm, it's in a chlorohydrate form while the rythmol is propafenone hydrochloride. It's a combination sodium channel blocker and beta blocker.

I've had very good luck with propafenone. It's kept my afib under control for the last 5 years. Your dosage seems low. In the case of rythmol, the lowest recommended dose is 150 mg THREE times a day.  In my case, I take 225 mg 3 times a day. My cardio insisted that I start this drug in a hospital (3 day observation period) just to be safe...but I've heard of a number of doctors who prescribe it without going through that requirement.

The drug has few side effects and I've experienced none.  The biggest danger is that of proarrhythmia.. i.e., that it will cause ventricular tachy or fibrillation.  The odds of that are very small (<1%) and usually shows itself when you inititally start it (hence the hospital observation). Here's a link to Askapatient with typical patient experiences with rythmol (they didn't have rythmonorn listed --- should be the same I assume).

I've been very happy with the drug.

Ian, your doc must be programmed it in VVIR mode.  My cardio said that to my GP, VVIR mode will not care for A-Fib.  It cares for V-Fib. You got V-Fib?

I started Rytmonorm today, dose 150 once only. I was on amiodarone 18 months and had  thyroid problems with TSH of 38. Levothyroxine brought this down in two months to normal. I find amio kept my heart very steady but I felt like a dog's breakfast three or four times a month. Confusion, dizzy, nausea, fatigue, malaise in body and head. I will now discover if this was the amio or the thyroid. I'm a scouser in Guatemala.
