Dear Judy:
Potentially useful medications in someone with severe coronary artery disease include aspirin, beta-blockers, and cholesterol-lowering medication.  Tenormin is a beta-blocker, and decreases the work the heart has to do.  Lipitor lowers cholesterol;  the appropriate dose depends on the blood "bad" cholesterol level.  An aspirin a day is often recommended to people with a history of a heart attack, if they do not have any bleeding problems.  Various vitamins and nutrients are being studied to see what role they might have in preventing heart disease; the data is still emerging.  At low doses, they usually do no harm, and may do some good.
If you wish to be evaluated here at the Cleveland Clinic, please call 1-800-CCF-CARE for an appointment with a cardiologist at desk F25.  Information provided in the Heart Forum is for general purposes only.  Specific diagnoses and therapies can only be provided by your doctor.
