AF causing LVSD?

AF causing LVSD?

My husband is normally fit and well. None smoker, social drinker and a firefighter. Four days ago he had an episode of AF which woke him up and lasted at least 6 hours before reverting to sinus rhythm with amioderone. An Echo showed moderate LVSD which came as a surprise to the cardiologist as my husband is asymptomatic. He thinks the LVSD may be normal in 4 weeks following a repeat echo and medication including beta blockers and an ace inhibiter. We are so worried and my question is what are the chances of the AF causing temporary LVSD? His brother and father have both had AF without any heart failure. Thank you so much

It is not uncommon for AF to cause some transient LV systolic dysfunction which typically improves with resolution of NSR, or at least good ventricular rate control.  Either one works well.  He has excellent prognosis in terms of improvement of his function and those are very good meds.  At the  same time, I would make sure that he gets frequent follow up and if he develops AF consider either using a pill in the pocket approach on top of the beta blockers or if the episodes become more frequent, be on a daily AF med.
