ASD

A female in my family is 45 years of age. She has ASD which was discovered at the age of 33. She is not complaining from ant thing. However, doctors recommended closing the ASD before permanent damage to the heart or lungs could take place.
Recent Echo showed an opening of 29.2mm with shunt 2.5:1. One hospital advised that this could be closed with the device Occluder. Another hospital reviewed the Echo and advised that the opening actually is 30-40mm which is too large to be closed with the device and that erosion could be a problem, and recommended minimally invasive surgery instead of the full open heart.
1. We need to know what is the erosion in these cases.
2. We understand that the device Occluder can cover up to 45mm, provided there is enough rim around the hole. Why the second hospital did not recommend the device?
3. Where can we get another firmed opinion on the device where we will be sure if it can or it cannot be done thru the device?
4. If the device in her case is possible, what are the risks of using it. Would it become loose by time?
5. If the device is not to be used, which option we need to consider, the minimally invasive or the traditional surgery?

Where are the best centers or the best doctors that perform the Occluder device to close ASDs? There are many centers across the US, but I need the best (apart from Mayo and Cleveland). Thanks..

You should directly consult with an establish heart surgeon at a reputable hospital that has performed at least a thousand such operations.  That would be my course of action, and Mayo Clinic or Cleveland Hospital  would be a good choice.
