AV node and heart block diagnosis

by tajwae, Sep 27, 2006 12:00AM
Hi, thank you for answering my question in advance.  I am a 35 year old active female, diagnosed with SVT after I went through the standard tests.  I had an EP study in July, then another for a 2nd opinion at Johns Hopkins two weeks ago.  During the 2nd study, they were not able to produce my symptoms, but found that I had a very low heart rate during that point in the study and was noted a "heart block" was found.  When I spoke to their office after the study, the nurse stated that they were concerned the condition was worsening.  I am now on Toprol XL 150mg once a day (still having the rapid heartbeat)and am scheduled to go back to the EP at Hopkins in January.  They stated there was a good possibility that I may need an ablation to the AV node with a possible pacemaker.  I was wondering, is a pacemaker always needed with this procedure, and what node is the heart block usually in - the sinus node or AV node?  Thank you!

tajwae,

Actually heart block can be in either the AV or Sinus node...or actually in any of the conducting fibers of the heart.  There are multiple types of ablations, each of them carries risk of causing damage to the other fibers of the heart. Some ablations carry mor of a risk of heart block, but again it depends on the underlying condition and procedure undertaken.  Hopkins has an outstanding EP department, you'll be in good hands.

good luck

Hi.  I am very sorry to hear about this.  I had some heart rythmn problems (SVT) a few years ago,  and hopefully you may find some reassurance in the fact that I am now pretty much cured.  This happens to alot of people who see qualified EP's.

Based on direct experience, I can tell you how important it is to take a hand in your own medical care.  Read up.  With your ablation scheduled for January you certainly have time to bone up for some informed decisions if you get started now.

regards,

Bromley
