Abdominal aneurysms

  My grandmother was diagnosed in having an aortic aneurysm.  However, the doctor will not operate until it has reach 5 centimeters (hers is 4.1).  Lately, she has had difficulty in walking and complains of lower back sensations when she stands.  I really would like to know if this condition is something to worry about and would it be necessary to seek a second opinion on the diagnosis.  I would also like to know if there is any type of diet or exercise that would help my grandmother.  Thank you for any information that you can give me.

Thank you for your question.  An aneurysm is a dilation of a blood vessel.  They can occur anywhere in the body and are a result of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and high blood pressure.  The areas where they can be dangerous are in the aorta.  The risk is of an aneurysm is rupture resulting in sudden death.  This risk increases as the size of the aneurysm increases.  In general when the aneurysm is > 5 cm an operation is indicated to repair the aneurysm.  This is major surgery but is usually well tolerated.  For those unable to undergo surgery new stents are being developed that can be placed in the aorta through a small hole in the leg.  Aneurysms do not usually cause back pain or difficulty walking.  There are no exercises or diets that help aneurysms.
Medication may be used to help control the blood pressure before surgery.
