Ablation for AV Nodal Reentry Tachy

by Davy__0, Mar 13, 1999 12:00AM

  Hi Doctors:
(I posted this message earlier, but I think it was missed).
Thank you for providing this service. I am in my early 40s and have had approx. 3-4 episodes of svt in the past 4 years, two of
which had to be converted in ER. I have been told by 3 EP specialists that they each believe I have av nodal reentrant
tachycardia. I really want to put this svt business behind me, but can't seem to get up the nerve to have the procedure. I have
heard that people have had difficulty breathing and/or have to have pacemakers after the procedure. Do you think my worries
are unfounded? Is av nodal reentry tach. pretty easily corrected and can this type of tach. be pretty accurately diagnosed by
looking at the ER strips prior to the procedure? Thank you.

Dear Davy,
Thank you for your question.   AV node reentry tachycardias are fast heart rates caused by "short circuits" in the AV node.  These can be treated with ablation of the extra pathway.  The procedure is well tolerated and is very safe.  There is a risk of having to have a pacemaker but this is rare.  More information about ablation can be found at: http://www.heartcenter.ccf.org:8080/patinfo/patguide/p_ablate.htm
I hope you find this information useful.  Information provided in the heart forum is for general purposes only.  Only your physician can provide specific diagnoses and therapies.  Please feel free to write back with additional questions.
If you would like to make an appointment at the Cleveland Clinic Heart Center, please call 1-800-CCF-CARE or inquire online by using the Heart Center website at www.ccf.org/heartcenter.  The Heart Center website contains a directory of the cardiology staff that can be used to select the physician best suited to address your cardiac problem.
